Southwest Charter School - Aaron Meyer Benefit Concert this Sunday

Good Afternoon All - Wanted to send one last reminder to you of the benefit concert this Sunday. The details are below. Also, children are welcome. Hope to see you on Sunday!

AARON MEYER BENEFIT CONCERT FOR SOUTHWEST CHARTER SCHOOL

Concert Rock Violinist Aaron Meyer has performed for world leaders and dignitaries as well as held solo appearances with major orchestras and ballet companies throughout the world. He has composed music for, and/or shared the stage with major artists, including rock band Everclear, Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, Pink Martini, Leftover Salmon, The Temptations, and 2002 Miss America - Katie Harman. Aaron has generously agreed to perform a concert to benefit the Southwest Charter School. He and pianist Kyla Cummins will play songs from Aaron's newest CD, From The Beginning.

EARLIER BEFORE SCHOOL CARE
There have been requests to start the before school care earlier for those parents who have to be at work at 7:00. So, before school care is now available as early as 6:30 am.

SOUTHWEST CHARTER SCHOOL BOARD MEETING
The Southwest Charter School Board will have its next meeting on Tuesday October 9th. Details on the exact time will be out shortly.

SWCS Opens! PE Equipment Needs, Armory Meeting

Good Afternoon All - As many of you know, the Southwest Charter School has finally opened! Our fist day of school was Wednesday, September 12th!! After two and a half years of hard work, our vision of small class sizes and connection to our community is now living! Thanks to all of you who have contributed.

We do still space at the school. If you have an interest in small class sizes for your children and they aren't enrolled at SWCS, you should visit the school and talk with the principal and teachers.

Also, we do have a need for PE equipment. If anyone has balls, jump ropes, a basketball hoop, etc., please contact Sue at the school or drop by. The location is:

Lastly, as some of you know, we will be looking for our long term home ASAP. One site that is a possibility it the Armory on Multnomah Blvd. Five proposals for the site have been submitted. One was submitted by Community Partners for Affordable Housing. We have had preliminary discussions with them about integrating the school into their plans.

There is a meeting tonight at the Armory where the five different proposals will be reviewed.

REVIEW OF ARMY RESERVE ARMORY USE PROPOSALS

**The meetings will be held on-site in the center drill hall. Because we are meeting on Army Reserve property, please refrain from bringing backpacks, and all attendees will be required to show picture ID upon entering the building.**

Work Party, Saturday 9/1 10:00 AM

Attention all SWCS community members! We are having a work party at our school tomorrow (Saturday, September 1st) starting at 10:00 AM and going until we're ready to stop. We'll be tearing things down, building them back up, painting and putting a school together! You'll want to wear your work clothes and be prepared to do some hands-on activities to help our teachers and kids get ready for September.

Kids are welcome- we recommend bringing a game or toy and a snack.

SW Charter School Update - WE HAVE A LOCATION - Open House Thrusday and Friday

Hi All - Hope you had a good weekend. We have wonderful news. We are very pleased and excited to announce that we have secured a home for our school!

SCHOOL LOCATION FOUND
The Southwest Charter School has a location! The school will be in a stand alone building in John's Landing at the corner of SW Hood and SW Pendleton. It has great access, is close to a number of parks and green spaces and has all the space we need for this year.

We will be having an Open House on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning to show off the building. Come meet our teachers and see the school facility.

Based on demand and the experience that Sue has with Pre-K programs, the Southwest Charter School will be offering a Pre-K program beginning this fall for children ages 4 and 5. Details on the program will be available shortly.

OFFICE HOURS
Sue is having office hours next Wednesday and Thursday, August 1st and 2nd for individual parent meetings. She's meeting with parents in Studio 6C at the Multnomah Arts Center from 9:00am to 1:00pm. Please call her at 503-927-2792 to set up an appointment.

LAMPS THRIFTWAY FUNDRAISING
As with many of the schools in the area, there is now a Southwest Charter School bin at the Lamb's Garden Home Thriftway. Lamb's will donate 3-5% of your purchase from Saturday shopping to the SWCS. Simply deposit your receipt in the Southwest Charter School bin when you shop on Saturdays. Also, you can donate your bottle return deposits receipt at anytime.
